I'm reading the Emperor of Scent, a book by Chandler Burr on the famous/infamous scent research pioneer Luca Turin, who wrote all the reviews above. They were probably published first in his Perfume: The A-Z Guide, but these are scanned from The Smell Culture Reader. This guy knows his nose and has an uncanny ability to verbalize it.

10 000 odours

I'm not sure this is allowed but here are 2 essays from The Smell Culture Reader, edited by Jim Drobnick, published by Berg. (click to enlarge.) One is a nostalgic personal account by the extraordinary Helen Keller, and the other, by Oliver Sacks, is a more journalistic retelling of a couple of smell experiences had by his friends.

The cast from the plastic mold came out reasonably well- I guess this proves money does buy convenience. Some particulars:

forgot to use the vegetable oil spray I intended to
left it at room temperature for 8h
mold pieces took a bit of jiggling to remove
some undercuts stayed stuck in the mold
the oculus spire broke off again

The wax surface took on the striated texture of the plastic and is a bit streaky and crumbly. Also, I didn't scent this one.

oh my god it's a mirage

Was kinda bored and bummed out today so I thought I'd watch this for a bit of picking up/inspiration and ended up in serious BB black hole. Thanks Beastie Boys and Spike Jonze - you are amazing. can't stop won't stop

These are kind of old. The 3 rhino screen grabs are from a few weeks ago, from when I was cleaning up my model for Vince to very generously print at Ryerson for me. I thought the bad mesh/good mesh messages were funny - not only in themselves and their detailed/detached assessments but also how strongly I reacted to them... these scripts somehow compelled me to spend hours trying to fix my 'bad' work. If only I had automated messages from my computer telling me how many degenerate faces need fixing in my thesis! oh well...

And here are the 4 fruits of my rhino labour so far. They cost $170 (approx. 11 cubic inches of plastic at $15/cubic inch) to fabricate and while I'm going to do the wax thing on them to see how it goes, I've already kind of ditched this process in my mind for other possibilities. Oh, and the 3d printer at school is now officially operational and ready for use.
